Jordan is off duty on spring equinox, Ren and Jordan have dinner.“Nightshade is making a mess of the city.”
“How so? I heard nobody had been seriously harmed.” Ren replies, wondering at Jordan’s comment.
“Not as yet,” he says, “but one time soon someone might get killed, and people’s livelihoods, materials that they worked hard to obtain are being stolen from them unjustly.”
“Worked hard for?” Ren smiles, “Heirlooms and bobbles from dandies and deep-pockets.”
“Yes… that is true. But maybe it is just the risk he takes.” Jordan sighs, taking a sip of wine and continues “Endangering the lives of the honest people of the city.”
“Maybe he is just trying to be daring, maybe it makes him feel powerful and alive.” Ren says, trying hard not to sound defensive.
“Then he should join the Enshallen army, be a protector not an antagonist.” Jordan retorts, obviously beginning to get annoyed with her.
“You and I both know there is nothing going on right now besides the Cerelian-Farmer conflict, Lebanon getting the Maelstrom Isles, and the search for the missing children, nothing warranting the need of a bandit or spy. Although frankly I think Andrell should have someone watching Lebanon, maybe that is what Cerelia is up to…”
“You almost sound like you are defending him.” Jordan looks at Ren intently.
“Of course not,” Renalli looks a bit unsettled, places her glass down and glances up a Jordan, “it is just… Jordan, Do you feel alive?” Ren works to calm her nerves, she can’t blow it now.
“What kind of question is that? Of course I’m alive. I am breathing. I’m sitting right here with you, that is all I need to be complete.” Jordan folds his hands over Ren’s.
“Honey’d words from a honey tongue.” Renalli smiles back at him. “Tell me the truth. Do you truly believe you are Living?”
“Serving as protector is satisfying and enough living for me. I enjoy the peace between crisis.”
Renalli sighs, “Fair enough” Standing up Renalli takes Jordan’s hand and leads him back to her room. She pours two sniffers of brandy and slips a small dose of a sleeping potion into Jordan’s glass. They drink, sit on the bed and kiss, and Jordan falls into Ren’s arms, asleep. Ren undresses him and tucks him into bed. Glancing at him sadly, and Renalli slips into the night to become Talon Nightshade and prove she is still alive.
Ren/Talon heads over to Kalo’s place to pick up her alter ego’s horse. Her conversation with Jordan has her thoughts troubled. Some day her house of cards will come crashing down around her, and yet she can’t stop. She needs this to feel alive. Somehow she has become the very thing she ran away from her father to avoid – a life as a lady in court.
Leaving Kalos’ she quickly rendezvous with Jack and Jarvis. The three of them speed outside the city gates to some of the outlying roads. Ren knows that some of the nobles who were at Lorelei’s earlier today will be headed back to Thames tonight. A perfect opportunity to make up for a day of boredom in court – and put a little fear into some stuffy nobles.
“My source in the palace assure me that the lord of upper Perovia will be passing this way tonight,” Talon tells Jack and Jarvis. “He’s wealthy enough to afford us some gold – and some sport.”
Talon directs them to their ambush spot, and settles down toa wait the nobleman. They don’t have long wait when the pompous Lord Gestour appears down the road from Roscorin City. Ren is about to launch the plan into action when two horsemen come galloping down the road from the direction of Thames, and blast through your ambush. Jack and Jarvis are caught completely by surprise, and you call them off, not sure what this sudden development means.
The horsemen appear as if they are going to blaze on past Lord Gestour when they suddenly pull up and one of them slams Gestour off his horse. The two strangers dismount, and one pins down the struggling Gestour with his foot. “Damn,” Ren mutters to herself, “they are taking my sport from me.”
