You sigh deeply, and lean back in your overstuffed chair. The sun is setting, the light shining through the window giving your embassy office a warm glow. The negotiations between the farmers and the Cerelians haven’t gone well. No, not well at all. Things have gotten so tense, so scary, that Lorelei insisted you start being accompanied by a couple of the embassy guards. The only problem with that was that you had to ask King Andrell to bolster the embassy’s guards , so that you weren’t over working the ones already working there.
But that was the least of your problems. The farmers are really dead-set against the temple, and the Cerelians are stubborn. Several times violence has erupted, and it has always been on the part of the farmers. Three Cerelians have been seriously beaten, and the farmers won’t assist the authorities in bringing the culprits to justice.
You do have to admire the Cerelians faith though. Throughout every unfortunate incident, they have persevered, and turned the other cheek. They simply shrug, and say the Goddess will bring them justice if they are faithful enough. That she is a protector of innocence, and that they must be guilty of some transgression, since she hasn’t protected them.
You shake your head at their misplaced faith. You know Cerelia, you’ve talked to her a few times, and you know she isn’t a goddess. You know she never claimed to be a goddess. That these people who call themselves Cerelians worship her despite her own protests. That she is the loudest of those who claim she is no goddess; all because of some incident with a little girl who drowned because of a couple of bullies. Overwhelmed with gult, Cerelia retrieved the girls soul from Knorr’s realm and a religion was born.
You close your eyes, lost in your thoughts. You wonder if Jotham and Courtney have found Aleana yet. You wonder what the rest of the Companions are up to. You wonder if Jordan misses you as much as you miss him. But mostly you are wondering if you could coax Cerelia into playing the role of goddess long enough to convince the Cerelians to move their temple – before any of them get hurt.
Aleana was always coming and going as she pleased. Not her parents fault really. Future selves really should leave the past alone… Too dispruptive. There was something different about this disappearance however.
You are golted from your thoughts suddenly by a light tapping at the door. You look at the setting sun and realize the new guards should be rporting for duty at any moment. You wonder if you will like the new guards or not. “Enter,” you call out as you sit up in your chair. A handsome young man in the shimmering uniform of a sergeant steps into the room.
“Segeant Jordan Malloc reporting for duty, Ma’am,” he says as he salutes sharply…
Renalli’s heart leaps in her chest and a mischieveous grin flashes across her face. She stands up, and walks around Jordan. “so you are what Andrell has sent me?” She inspects him from all sides. “How many did you bring and are they as good as you?”
He responds straight faced, “I have brought eleven men with me, and none come close to my skill.” He glances down at Renalli and smiles, “And actually, Norag sent me, not Andrell.”
“Then I guess I should take you as my personal bodyguard.”
“I think I would enjoy that.”
“I shold hope so. Mmmm I think it is time for supper. You will join.” Renalli bites her lip as she says this and the starts to walk past him. Jordan grabs her around the waist and turns her to face him holding her in an iron grasp.
“You like ordering me about don’t you.”
Giving him a quick peck. “Sure do.” Renalli breaks free from his grasp and runs out the door. They chase each other like children to the dining hall, giggling and laughing the whole time. Ren leaves the problems behind for in the morning. Tonight she will relax and enjoy herself…
After a few days of showing up with more men-at-arms the farmers will calm down and stop being so violent. The Cerelians will agree to stop working on the temple for a month and the farmers will agree to a truce until you can figure out a compromise.
