Nishella

an elf, and once captain to Lord Arian in Maddas’ army, she later gained renown as one of his generals. She too betrayed the second Dark
Emperor in his final days, but unlike Lord Dexter, she remained loyal to the High King until her death in 1062.

Nishella’s Story

When she was growing up, Nishella had always found herself attracted to her little brother Erin’s friend, Jotham. But Jotham was picked on a lot by the local bullies, and she felt that if she showed any affection to him, the bullies would only come down on him harder. Even when she finally got the nerve to kiss him, she made him promise not to tell anyone - not because she was ashamed or embarrassed, but because she didn’t want to see anything happen to him.

A few weeks later, when her father walked out on his family, Jotham was the only one who stood up for them. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to see Jotham before he was run out of town, so she was never really able to tell him how she felt. A few days later she got up the nerve to leave to find him, and encountered the same bullies who had beat up her brother, and got Jotham into so much trouble.

Of course they harassed her, and when she accidently let it slip that she was going to find Jotham, they assaulted her. Before she knew what was happening, she found herself being raped by all five of them. Left lying by the side of the road, battered, bruised and thoroughly ashamed, she went back home. Her mother did not believe her story, and assumed that she had snuck off to see Jotham, and this is how he had treated her. So that it would happen again, her mother packed up the family and moved north to Perovia.

Once in Perovia, Nishella was able to put the pain of Jotham’s loss and her assault behind her for a while. She made friends with Katii, Lord Wolftane’s daughter, and began to train in swordplay with her. Once she had been taught to wield a sword, Nishella’s plan began to form. She swore that she would become an accomplished enough swordsman to hunt down the fools who had raped her, and gut each one of them.

She took work as a roadwarden in Perovia for awhile, until she was fortunate enough to encounter one of the men who had raped her many years ago. Like she had sworn, she challenged him, and spilled his guts on the road between Roscorin and Thames. Unfortunately, though, she hadn’t paid attention to his friends, and they fingered her as his murderer and she was forced to flee Perovia.

She became an outlaw for awhile, merely as a means of survival. She found that young women trusted her, and many, when they heard her story, confessed that they, too had been raped. She found it easier to target those who had defiled a woman, and was quite a successful outlaw. It was during this time in her life, she managed to find and gut two of the others who had raped her. But she tired of the harshness of the life, and drifted south where she was unknown.

Once in the southlands, she took up entering in archery tournaments, where she did quite well until she came to the attention of a local mercenary captain, Garrett Telchu. The two would never have crossed paths, but one of his best lieutenants happened to be one of the men she sought. She left him pinned to a bed in a local inn, spitted on his own sword. Telchu swore vengeance on her for her action, but before he could take his revenge upon her, Arian forced him to recruit her instead.

She spent many years under Telchu, despising the man, but always using the opportunities he presented to seek out the last of her attackers. Finally, she had, had enough of Telchu, and went to Arian, demanding to be transferred to another command. Arian did the unthinkable to Telchu, and gave Nishella her own command.

She doesn’t much care for the empire, but she hasn’t been handed any dirty assignments yet. Arian relies upon her to keep the peace and justice in the territories he assigns her to patrol, and she does an admirable job of it. The one thing she does admire about Maddas’ empire is that justice is swift, and crimes like rape are punished severely. As she becomes more exposed to the politics of the empire, however, the more disillusioned she has become. She stays at her post, though, and does her job for two reasons - one, she has never been asked to participate in, or even observe one of the atrocities she has heard rumors about, and two, she knows that there isn’t anyone strong enough to stand up to the empire yet. When either of those happens, she is likely to jump ship, and around 90% of her men will follow her.

She still wants to be reunited with Jotham. There has never been another man for her. She thought she found him once, but the man was only a clever impostor who’s real name was Jevan. Why he was impersonating Jotham she still hasn’t figured out, but it has made Jotham’s trail harder to find. She is pretty sure that Jotham is dead, but she still wants to find out what happened to him.

She still has one more of the bullies to track down, and then she will retire back to Perovia.
