After the untimely death of Bracken Gem at age 22 in 1914 PathFinder was called on once again to choose the ruler of the Gatelands. All were prepared for the sword to point to Modig, Bracken’s cousin. Modig at age 25 was the only candidate in the Gem family that was not too young or too old to rule. At the ceremony PathFinder pointed directly at Modig. The crowd cheered Modig moved towards the stage to claim PathFinder and complete the ceremony but as he moved the sword did not follow as it should have. Instead it stayed steady pointing at the young girl who was standing directly behind Modig. The sword had chosen Modig’s 14 year sister, Shamira.
Modig Gem took PathFinder's decision very hard and left the Gatelands for the first year of Shamira’s rule. His absence was excused with the task of helping the Gateland’s Ambassador to the High King whose age had been preventing him from making the journey to Andrellsport as frequently as he needed. For the first year he stayed in Andrellsport and corresponded with Fernand the Ambassador by messenger. He returned for the celebration of his sister’s first year as ruler. He put his hard feelings aside and became a much needed member of Shamira’s delegation. Once Pollack Grieves became the Ambassador to the High King, it was Modig who stood at Shamira’s side and became one of her advisors. This new arrangement worked well for Modig who now married and with a young child of his own no longer wanted to do the traveling required of an Ambassador.
