==The Red Sorcerer==
Known primarily as the founder of the new [[UniversityofMagic University of Magic]] on the [[IsleoftheWinds Isle of the Winds]], Kelkinal was one of the most fascinating personalities there. A tall red haired elf, he was rarely seen outside of his tower. Not only was he the founder and director of the University, he was one of the [[CompanionsofLight Companions of Light]] - the heroes who put the High King Andrell on the throne. He was also well known as an advisor to [[GarathAndrellson High King Gareth]], the creator of the [[RealmsSwords Realms Swords]], and the one who locked the [[PathsofMystery Mysteries Gates]].
When he is at the University, he is usually secluded in his rooms in the highest tower of the school. It seems, however, that he is rarely at the school anymore, yet no one is able to track his coming and goings. It is known that he was married to a [[Dryads Dryad]] named [[DaphneMezereum Daphne]], and has a home in the hills northwest of [[Roscorin]].
During Cerelia's Ascension, Kelkinal was recruited to the service of [[Knorr]] and became Knorr's Ferryman, a post he has held for the last 800 years.
==Kelk’s Past==
Kelkinal was raised in a back water little down. His father, Berall, was a simple farm hand for a large farm in the area, and was known to be one of the stupidest men in the town. He was the butt of most jokes, kind of the village idiot. His mother was a clerk for an apothecary. Kelkinal’s parents had three children, a boy older then Kelk, and a girl that was younger. Kelkinal’s older brother, Ronalin (Ronny) always treated Kelkinal poorly, beating Kelkinal on a regular basis. Ronny grew up to be the town drunk and a wife beater; he also followed his father’s footsteps into a life on the farm. Ronny also picked on Kelk’s younger sister, Jinella, who as an outcast found companionship the only way she knew how. Jina became well known through out the town, mainly at the local bar. She started on her chosen career very early, around the age of 17, just before Kelk left home. Kelkinal was always different then the rest of his family, smart, disciplined, and with ambition, he dedicated his whole life to getting out of the hellhole of his childhood. Kelk’s mother, Serenity, saw her son’s torment and helped him however she could, she even got him an apprenticeship at the Apothecary, a young man that looked ancient, named Norcalon, whose shop she was a clerk at. Kelkinal grew to love his work at the little shop, and to care for the shopkeeper very much. So much so that he even imagined that maybe his mother wasn’t always faithful to her husband. This feeling was emphasized as his childhood continued and he saw how much he was different then his siblings. Kelkinal couldn’t help but play up every similarity between him and the apothecary, even thinking they looked alike.
When Kelk wasn’t at Norcalon’s shop, he was at the library with his nose in a book. It was his way of excepting his childhood. Kelkinal had frequent debates and discussions with the librarian, Sagel. Sagel found Kelk’s knowledge a sign that all was not lost on youth. However Kelk was a belligerent youth and many of their discussions became heated. One discussion on philosophy became very heated and loud. Eventually the two were insulating the others position, and beliefs, and taking it all personally. The “discussion” ended with Kelk getting thrown out of the library and asked him not to return. Kelk then spent most of his time between Norcalon’s and the town archives, using a different place to do that same thing, read.
Kelk’s reclusiveness was noticed by all. His father hated him for his intelligence, his brother beat him for his success, his mother doted on him because of his innocence, and his sister loved him for his attention. As a child, Kelk had few friends, and no romantic involvement’s. He greatly preferred the character in literature to that real people. And the people he mainly spoke with were librarians, teachers, and priests. He took a fancy to the janitor at the public archives, a wrinkly and stooped old man by the name of Smythe. Smythe told stories of grand adventure, and of living life alone on the trail. To Kelk, it seemed like Smythe had been everywhere and done almost everything that could be done in a lifetime, but Kelk couldn’t understand why this old man with all he had done was a simple laborer. Kelk grew very interested in history, especially mythology. And read every book in the archive about it.
The apothecary liked Kelkinal too, he treated him almost like a son, and eventually traded in some favors to have Kelkinal apprentice at an Alchemists keep a few miles away. Kelkinal hated leaving the shop, but he relished in leaving his “home” town. Kelkinal felt he had a gift at magic, and a power he did not even understand himself. He did like the idea that he was better then the rest of his family, and had a talent that they didn’t. During his time at the keep, he wrote his mother and sister regularly. He was ashamed of the way his sister was treating herself, but he still loved her, and longed for a day she would find someone that could convince her not to sell herself the way she did.
Kelk’s first crush was Victoria, the daughter of Vieznor, the Alchimist he was apprenticed too. A beautiful young lady with far more body then brains. Early in the romance the Alchimist stepped in and forbid the two having contact. The Alchimist did not dislike Kelk, but did not want his daughter to forever in hiding the way any magic user or their family would be forced too. The wizard hated having to hide his daughter for her childhood, but hoped that she could grow up and go out on her own, and not have to be in hiding. He also knew that Kelk would be his apprentice for years, and didn’t want a quarrel between the two to break his princess’s heart nor make Kelk any more sullen and removed, thus making him almost no help to the aging Alchimist. Victoria hated her father’s restrictions, and felt he was paranoid. So in rebellion of her father, flaunted herself to Kelkinal as much as she could. In a way it could be said that she seduced him, playing on his innocence. However, as much as she was involved with Kelkinal to rebel from her father, she also was scared of him. And that, along with the feelings she eventually started feeling for Kelk (she feared her fathers wrath for Kelk’s sake too), led her to keep it all secret from him. She liked for his reclusive tendencies and found him a challenge to crack. Kelkinal knew that the romance was more about rebellion then anything, and that Victoria felt almost nothing for him, however, he had never felt any of the feelings he had with her, and believed them to be love, but even he knew he could be mistaken. Kelkinal learned very quickly, and was soon no more then a slave, having learned all he could from the Alchimist. The only thing keeping him there was the girl. But she soon grew tired of Kelkinal, and starting seeing a young warrior, and she and Kelk grew more and more distant. She went off and married the lad, probably because of being pregnant, and Kelk figured it was time to leave the keep. The Alchimist thanked Kelk for his service, and provided Kelk with a few rations and the like, and bid him good journey.
Kelk wondered around for a while, not really sure what he was going to do with his life. He worked for a short while as an appraiser for a merchant, Miserelli, but was not happy there. He spent most of his time stumbling around, lost in his own thoughts. He did remember Smythe talking about the life of the adventure, and that seemed like it would suit Kelkinal. It wasn’t long until Kelkinal heard of a bar where adventurers were often recruited. Kelkinal became a frequenter of the establishment, often drowning himself in the ale while “waiting to be hired” (This is where the events of the first game take place and Kelk goes off with the group.)
Kelkinal found fitting in with others hard as a child and not much had changed with him becoming an adult. He quickly grew to dislike certain member of the party. And in a way, the dislikes grew faster then the likes. He knew he liked Griswald, the homeless beggar that now led others. But Dexter grated on Kelk, his antics seemed insultingly simplistic. And (Jeremy’s Character, I forget the name) was a complete ass, rather like Kelk’s brother, with the mentality that anything can get got through brute force. And Kelk never felt that he was carving out a place with the group. He wanted to more about the powers of the dwarf artist, but could never seem to get a word in.
News of the death of Kelk’s father, in a barn fire, reached Kelk while he was traveling with the party, shortly after their run-in with a dragon. Kelkinal, regretful of leaving the group, thinking he would never be able to get back to them, but also thinking that if he ever did meet up with them again, that maybe the absence would help things decided to return home to help his family. Kelk’s return was not expected, and not really wanted. It had been years since Kelk’s last visit home, and had grown distant from everyone. The death of Berall wasn’t particularly hard for anyone, and few see the reason for the return. Ronny had since gotten married and even had a son, one that was not unlike his father. Jina had moved in with a man that abused as much as her father and brother had. And Kelkinal’s mother had moved to a small room over Norcalon’s shop.
Kelkinal’s adventures had given him the courage to make a few changes. First he confronted his brother for the years of brutality to his family (both the one he had at his mothers house, and the one he had in his own). Kelkinal swore to his brother that if he ever heard of further abuse that the same would brought down on Ronny’s head. Kelkinal then spoke with Filnor, the local farmer that employed Ronny and had him try and cut back the drunks supply of ale, and recommended firing Ronny if he did not change his ways. Filnor agreed, stating that while Berall was not the brightest or most decent man, but he was a loyal worker, and the least that Filnor could do was to watch over Ronny. Next, Kelkinal secede out his sister. After a long talk she agreed that she needed to get out of the lifestyle she was in. They decided that it would be best if she moved out of the area. Kelkinal set up a job for her as a seamstress apprentice in a town about 50 miles from her home. Jina promised to change her life and try to do things right. However, Jina’s “live-in” Robert, showed up at the end of the conversation and immediately blew up at Kelk and Jina. Robert starts to beat up Kelkinal, over the Jina’s screams to stop. Kelk finally is able to grab hold of Robert’s arm and casts a sleep spell. Robert then slumps to the ground snoring VERY loudly. Kelk grabs Jina and runs out the door. Kelk and Jina travel to where Jina’s new live will be. The weeklong trip gives the two time to talk about many things.
Kelkinal returns to the group after straightening out his family. But it pains him on how he avoided the one family member he loved most of all, his mother. It hurt him to see her turning to the sanctity of the shop as easily as she had. But Kelk could understand he had done it many times himself.
