How Juliet met Jacob

One day, on her way home, she noticed a masked man running down the street clutching his side. He swerved to avoid knocking her down and kept on running. Julie decided to hide from the guards that rushed by afterwards. “Stealing in broad daylight? Not a very good Nightshade.” Julie giggled.

Curious she followed after to see what the results of the chase were. As she walked she noticed a small access door with a bloody handprint on it, fresh. She could tell that the guards had not noticed it and passed by. “Not very good guards either.” She thinks to herself. Not knowing why she does it, Julie wipes off the handprint before going into the building.

She creeps slowly in. She hears the sound of his labored breathing, and does not want to startle him. As she turns the corner, they see each other. He jumps as though he is going to attack her but falls back down. Julie moves to his side, and begins checking his wounds as her mother taught her. The man has passed out.

“Gunshot in the side, bullet went clean through. Need to stop the bleeding.” Julie whispers to herself, as she pulls out a roll of bandages that she brings with her everywhere. “You are really lucky, I hate pulling out bullets. Never have done it myself, but even watching Mother it does not look fun.” She keeps up a low voiced monologue as she checks for other injuries.

“Thank you, little one.” Comes a deep whisper as she finishes up, “Why are you helping me?”

“Oh I always wanted to meet Talon Nightshade, even if you are a poor one at that.”

He begins to chuckle and stops hissing in pain. “I am no Talon Nightshade.”

“Of course not. I don’t think you should move for a few days, but I am not sure about you staying here. It isn’t the cleanest of places. But you have lost a lot of blood and a badly twisted ankle. I am surprised that you were able to run on it at all.”

“Look at you, the young doctor. What are you 8? 9 years old?”

“10. Thank you very much.” Continuing in a voice mimicking her mothers, “And if you know what is best you will listen to your doctor and not get your fool self hurt worse by over working yourself.”

The young man smiles, “As you command, good doctor.”

“Well now it is time for my fee.”

“Oh?”

Julie curls up with her knees under her chin. “Yes, I wish to hear the story of how you got into this mess,” she says with a grin.

Julie tended to Jacob’s wounds over the next few days and they struck up an odd sort of friendship. Jacob was only 16 and not stealing gold, but stealing the heart of a married woman, whose husband did not take kindly to finding him in bed with his wife. Not to say that Jacob didn’t pinch a penny here and there as well, but that was not led to being shot.
