Jevan
Jevan’s story...
Jevan was twelve when his mother, Sirah, died. He grew up knowing he wasn’t her child, and that she had a secret, but he also knew she loved him very much. She was a simple druid, and taught him the ways of the forest. She also taught him how to defend himself with a multitude of weapons, because “People don’t like Druids.”
Five days after his twelfth birthday, he discovered that everything his mother had told him was a lie. Some of her many enemies finally caught up to her, and tortured and killed her while they forced Jevan to watch. They made Sirah tell Jotham the truth about her past and his, probably the worst torture they could inflict upon her.
It seems that she was an assassin - a quite successful one who had no morals when it came to which contracts she would take. Twelve years ago she was hired to kill a rather successful pit fighter named Dilson. She arrived to kill him just as his wife was delivering their children - twin boys. Dilson pleaded with her for his life, and finally gave up the firstborn of the twins in exchange for his life. (He told his wife that the boy had died shortly after she delivered him - common occurrence with twins.) Sirah, who was barren, took the child to the remote mountains of Southern Iskitaan and raised him as her own.
She hid her past from Jevan, and only took assassin work once or twice a year. When Jevan was a small child, he was a perfect cover for her, and later, when he got older, she left him home while she went on a “religious journey” for a few days.
After they killed her, the men left Jevan to his own devices. He was furious with the men, with his “mother” and especially with the man who should have been his father - the man who traded him away like a sack of potatoes. He left his forest home, not even bothering to cut his mother down from the tree the men finally hung her from.
Jevan decided to find his so called “father” and confront him about what he had done. It took years, but finally Jevan found this Dilson. Their conversation made Jevan so angry that he killed Dilson. Dilson’s wife was screaming when she found Jevan standing over Dilson’s body. “How did my good son Jotham become this evil killer?” she screamed at him.
It was at that moment that Jevan decided to find this favored son, Jotham and make his life as miserable as Jevan’s was. Once he found Jotham, he shadowed him, doing things that would make people despise, even hate Jotham, should he ever return to those places. Much to his disgust, Jotham was a wanderer, rarely returning to the same place. After five years of this, Jevan found a sword, one they called Shadowrunner, and gave up trying to ruin Jotham’s life in order to pursue a more profitable career as a thief.
Many years later Jevan tried to rob a man named Maddas, who was a powerful wizard. He was caught, and forced to beg for his life. Finally, Maddas agreed to let him go, though Jevan would have to give Maddas his soul when he died. Jevan agreed, figuring at least he wasn’t giving up a son, like his father had.
When Jevan left Maddas, he wandered north, to dwarven lands, where he became a confidant to a young dwarven lord named Alcon. Jevan slowly poisoned Alcon’s mind, and the two of them assassinated Alcon’s father, the King of Smokeview, and Alcon took the throne. Jevan began to enjoy this way of life - being the power behind the throne. He began to make secret deals with Maddas to deliver the dwarven kingdoms into Maddas’ empire, where he and Alkcon would be allowed to rule. Alcon’s ounger brother, Bindon, figured this out, and Jevan slew him before he could warn anyone else. None of Alcon’s other siblings were in a position to do more than feebly protest Alcon’s and his activities. The only wild card was Alcon’s younger brother Gelyon, who was outcast from Smokeview, yet had seemingly joined a group that was becoming widely known as the Companions of Light.
Jevan’s house of cards came tumbling down when Gelyon and the Companions showed up. Even worse, they had a young lady with them who turned out to be Jevan’s daughter. This frightened Jevan immensely, as a gypsy fortune teller had once told him that he was destined to die by his child’s hand, just as he had slain his own father. He tried to separate her from the rest of the group to kill her, yet his success at that and later convincing the young girl Melina to return his belt (a magic item) spelled his own doom. In a pitched battle several hundred feet above the Smoke river, she thrust his own sword through his belly, and they tumbled to their deaths in the icy waters below.
